The number of companies that have signed up for non-geographic phone numbers (NGSs) over the past few years has been nothing short of astounding. If you have never heard of these numbers, the most obvious advantage of using them is that they do not include area codes. This can help smaller companies appear larger, and since consumers prefer doing business with bigger companies, a UK 0844 number can and often will increase the number of monthly enquiries. But before you sign up for an account, it is important to know the differences between the 08 numbers. The most popular non-geographic phone numbers are 0800, 0844 and 0845 numbers. And though monthly service charges and installation costs may differ, the most important difference may be the cost to the customer.
For example, 0800 numbers can be used free of charge, while 0844 and 0845 numbers charge their customers at a fixed rate, often 3-5 pence per minute. So, why are the numbers that charge currently more popular with companies? Well, the primary reason is that the phone service provider will actually split the cumulative fees with the company at the end of the month. As you might expect, unless the company spends tens of thousands of minutes on the phone with customers each month, the payoff is bound to be small. However, it is often substantial enough to pay for the cost of the electricity or equipment rental fees or some other monthly service charge that would have otherwise come out of the company coffers.
Another advantage of these numbers is that the service charge is often extremely low or free and setup costs are nominal. In truth, these numbers are really nothing more than a business arrangement between the provider and the recipient in which both parties stand to make out like bandits, or at least petty thieves.
